"We owe this work to the memory and spirit of all of our ancestors."
- Stephanie Parker & Angelique Caro.
JERSEY
CITY , NJ -
For as long as she can remember media has fascinated her. One of her
first memories is role-playing with her father; she would be a reporter
and interview him on various topics. By the age of ten she was writing
stories under a pseudonym and passing them around to classmates. In
addition, she performed in dance recitals and acted in plays. She graduated
Magna Cum Laude from Morgan State University with a B.S. Degree in Telecommunications
and minor in Theatre Arts. Stephanie is currently working with writer
and cultural critic, Angelique Caro on a forthcoming
video essay & documentary titled, Diggin' Up Our Roots.
The
piece traces the family genealogy, and history of two families, one
African American and one Puerto Rican. These two sisters and friends
discover the common bonds and ties that bind the cultures and history
of African, Taino and Native American peoples. The struggles that these
people have endured in the Americas and the Caribbean, and the traditions
that have survived through their decendants are also addressed. Stephanie
Parker and Tewodross Melchishua formed The Soulsuite
Studios, an animation, multimedia, film/video production company.
Stephanie
and Tewodross Melchishua's first collaborative
work is an animated docu-narrative and artistic memorial on life of
legendary soul musician Donny Hathaway. The film is titled, Everything
Is Everything: A Tribute to Donny Hathaway.
This piece will be a celebration of Donny Hathaways musical genius
and influence. It also explores the connection between spirituality
and art, and Black music.
